Stay tuned for the bloopers at the end 😉

Ahhhhhhh, the lazy days of summer. I am not even kidding when I tell you the only reason I got out of my recliner yesterday was to go pee or make food. Those kinds of days are a rarity for me, so I took full advantage and sat on my happy ass ALL DAY LONG. I finally decided to uproot myself around 9pm and I headed into the studio to work on this weeks project.

In the vein of being lazy, this project was all about keeping it simple! I used a limited pallet as well as limited supplies. I only used what I had within arm’s reach (which in MY studio is literally EVERYTHING, but for the sake of this post, lets just pretend I have more space M’kay?) which was acrylic paint, ink and prismacolor art sticks.

I gessoed the record, painted the vinyl area with the acrylic paint and inks and then I drew and shaded my girls face with the art sticks. I used a small pieces of a book page for her dress and finished the piece off with an oil pastel and some Twinkling H2o’s.

I think she is super cute and I love the peaceful expression on her face. This piece is now available for sale, so email me at mixedmedidology@gmail.com if interested.

We are going out of town next week, so I am setting myself a challenge for Thrift Shop Thursday and Mixed MEdieology Monday – Find something that I can alter ‘on the road’ and use limited supplies to create the entire piece! Tune in next week to see what I find and how it turns out 😀

It was slim pickin’s at the thrift store this week!

I searched for over an hour before finally choosing an item.  My camcorder died before I found my item of the week, * totally NOT because it was plugged into the camera but not the WALL*  so you don’t see me actually FIND the item, but you can watch the rest of the shopping trip below. Plus I also show you a few of the other things I have picked up at yard sales and Michael’s recently.

Stay until the end for a cute outtake 😉

OK, so, you know how much I love Pinterest, right?

I am always inspired by things I see on there and am getting more and more addicted every day. I have started following more boards and more people and I am seeing sooooo many brilliant ideas!

One of those ideas was a change purse I saw several months ago and I have been searching for a change purse of my own to alter every since. The original photo was of a vintage coin purse and when you opened it up, it had this full set of top and bottom teeth hiding inside and it looked AWESOME!!!! The moment I saw it, I knew I wanted to make one of my own.

Every time I went to any thrift store or yard sale, I was on the look out for a change purse with just the right shape for the mouth. I finally found one on the last episode of Thrift Shop Thursday and I was sooooo excited! I had this vision of a creepy maw hidden in the depths of an unassuming coin purse and I had every intention of using it to really carry my money in. I just KNEW it would be awesome and that it would spark endless conversations! What I ended up with was something QUITE different.

*Que old timey horn blower – whah whah whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh* ;P

You can view the full video tutorial below.

While this is still totally cute, it is soooooo not what I had envisioned. I wanted creepy, dripping, vicious, scary-ass-clown-from-IT-teeth…….. instead, I ended up with chunky, funny, Cousin-Eddie-from-the-backwoods-Bucky-Bunny-teeth. And let me tell you why……..

*Normally* when I start a project, I lose myself in it. I can spend hours or even DAYS on one project and I make sure every little detail is perfect before moving on.  (Have I ever told you that I am a perfectionist who is still trying to be ok with her inner messy?????) However, I currently do not have the time I need to devote to any project that I want spectacular results from. My mother in law is visiting for a month, Christopher is out of school, it was 4th of July week  AND my husband had the whole week off work.

Yeah.

So anyway, I went into my studio with these grand plans for making these freakishly fabulous teeth and sticking them into this sweet, innocent little change purse. As soon as I started shaping the clay it began…

“Ma, where’s this?”

“Babe, blah, blah. blah”

“Ma, can I do so-and-so?”

“Babe, we need blankity blank”

“Edie, can you help me with this thing here?”

You get the picture.

Needless to say, within an hour, I just wanted to get these damn teeth made and stuck into the damn purse. I won’t even go into the details of how the top and bottom jaw would not fit together properly no matter what I did or how the bottom jaw broke completely the fuck in half! I mean seriously, how is it that all of our teeth can fit in our mouth and it still closes?????

So what would have normally taken me several hours to complete, still took me several hours to complete, but I wasn’t actually working on the project for all of those hours.

And there you have it. I have already decided that I am going to pull these teeth back out and redo the ENTIRE thing….. in SEPTEMBER ….. when SCHOOL is back in session and my house is empty during the day!!!!

End Rant.

I will be back on Thursday with a brand new episode of Thrift Shop Thursday! Please like, subscribe and share!!!!

Do I have a treat for you this week!

Normally, when I share a project, the video is done in time lapse, the blog post gives the simple step – by- step and I show a photo or two. This week’s project is different because I have decided to share it as a FREE Mini – class! Exciting huh?????

Because I had to sew this piece, I knew I wouldn’t be able to share it in time lapse and I really wanted you to be able to see and understand what I was doing. So, I am offering this weeks project as a sample of how my classes are run. My actual classes are obviously more in – depth, but this will give you a taste of my style, the amount of information you would receive and the format of how one of my full version classes are run.

I currently have a couple of classes available as self study and I will be releasing a Brand New Course this Summer. More details on what that course will be coming soon to a future blog post near you  😉

Alrighty! On to this weeks project.

I found this awesome tie dye dress at the thrift store last week and I just HAD to have it! I love big, flowing skits and these colors just made me happy 😉

DSC07483

I cut the top off of the dress, added and elastic waistband and viola’! I have an AWESOME tie dye skirt that is PERFECT for Summer!

This project only took me about 30 minutes from start to finish and that includes taking time to re-close my safety pin about 100 times!!!! You will understand that comment when you watch the video 😉

I love this skirt and i have already worn it twice since I made it! The first time I wore it was on the Thrift Shop Thursday shopping trip where I shot the footage for the finding of  this dress. If that makes NO sense what-so-ever, you really need to read this week’s Thrift Shop Thursday blog post 😉

I hope you enjoyed this mini- class and if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section below.

Big changes are coming soon to my blog, so keep watching for announcements!

I will see you on Thursday.

Big Hugs!!!!

HELLER 😀

Oh my goodness, I have got something super cool to show you this week, but first, I have to tell you about my shopping trip.

I needed some plant pots this weekend, so I stopped by the thrift store to see if they had any. Unfortunately, they did not, but since I was there, I figured I would look around.  Keep in mind, this was not my regular day to record Thrift  Shop Thursday, so I did not have my camcorder with me!

Normally when I go to the thrift store, I have a system. I start with the candles, move to the craft section, head over to the books, followed by the housewares, furniture, clothes and finally finishing at the boutique. This week, however, I veered from my normal path. It was like something was pulling me to work with fabric, so I listened to my instincts and headed straight for the clothing section.

I was just looking through the clothes for some unique fabric when I discovered this weeks item. It was a plus size (5 X) dress and even though it was entirely too big for me, I KNEW I had to have it! Luckily I had my phone with me and I was able to whip it out and shoot the video footage of the find!!!

DSC07483

Fast forward to this weeks regular (recorded) T S T  trip – I got NUTHIN’! I searched the ENTIRE store and didn’t find a single thing that inspired me or even had any potential for altering! I am sooo glad I had my phone with me when I found that dress because if I hadn’t I would have probably created something I wasn’t really happy with… and that wouldn’t be very nice, now would it Precious.

I have already finished making the skirt and I can’t wait to share the video with you on Mixed MEdieology Monday!

*Another little behind the scenes tidbit – You can’t tell it, but since I had already found the dress (and altered it!) by the time I shot this weeks footage, I am actually wearing the finished skirt in this weeks Thrift Shop Thursday Video! Sooo, it’s kind of like I time traveled… I am wearing the item to FIND the item ;)*

My blog will be changing within the next couple of weeks, so keep watching for some big announcements.

That is it for today.  I will see you on Monday!

Have you ever been working on an art piece and it suddenly takes a turn you were not expecting? A turn for the worse??? That’s what happened to me with this week’s Mixed MEdieology Monday project. I had one vision in my head when I started working on the piece and about half way through it started spiraling out of control, down a black hole.

When I first began this project, I knew I wanted to turn one of the ‘prettier’ male paper dolls into a girl with long hair in a big poofy dress. In the end I accomplished that, but she doesn’t look anything like I had hoped and I am not happy with the end result.

I am really happy with the background and the little bird in her hand and I even like the little kitten. I am not so happy with the big poofy dress and long, flowing hair ;P

2013-05-13 11.54.57

When I glued the book pages down, I didn’t realize that the paper doll legs were going to PROTRUDE so much. I should have stopped right there and cut them off, but I figured I would be able to camouflage them with the paint. I was wrong. LOL!  I’m not sure if you can tell it from the pictures, but you can CLEARLY see the outline of the legs and feet of the original doll. I continued to paint the dress and it just got worse and worse with every layer. I actually edited out SEVERAL steps of the dress evolution. If I hadn’t this video would have been MUCH longer and I don’t think you would want to sit through that 🙂   I also got her hair too big and uneven and it looks like a mop just sitting on top of her head.  I’m still not sure how I managed to do that, but by the time I realized it, it was too late to fix it.

2013-05-13 11.55.39

I normally don’t talk about all of the screw-ups that happen while I am working on these projects because I am usually very happy with how my pieces turn out. I can usually turn it around in the end and ‘fix’ anything I ‘mess up’ along the way. This time, however…. not so much. I decided to tell you about what I DON’T like because I want you to know that even after all this time, I still make crap art. I still make things I am unhappy with and I still screw up some of these projects beyond ‘repair.’  I am telling you this because I want you to know it is OK  to make crap art on occasion. Let me repeat that… IT. IS. OK.

It is ok to make pieces that you are unhappy with or just plain out DON’T LIKE! That doesn’t make you a ‘bad’ artists. It doesn’t even make you any LESS of an artist. It just means you made a piece that you don’t really like. And that’s ok!

It is ok because …….

1) Art is subjective. Just because YOU don’t particularly like it, doesn’t mean NO ONE will like it. (And besides, who cares if no one likes it!)

2) You are probably on the verge of a breakthrough and need to push past the bonds that have been holding you in place.  Let me elaborate on each of these.

Art is subjective – Last year I made a crazy looking little monster thing for one of my groups. I HATED that damn monster! I thought it was the WORST piece of crap I had ever made! I thought for SURE no one else would like it and I was embarrassed to even show a photo of it.  I wanted to get rid of it, so I put it on my vendor table at the only craft fair I have ever participated in. That ugly little scraggly monster was the FIRST thing that sold that day! I could not believe it! And the lady that bought it…. absolutely LOVED it. She even asked me how she could mount it on her refrigerator!!! To this day I still think it is the worst piece of crap I have EVER made, but that doesn’t matter because it was EXACTLY what another person had been searching for.

You are probably on the verge of a break though – My creative journey has been a roller coaster and I think most of you can probably relate to this.  I go though phases  where I am really liking most of what I create. I feel confident and inspired and I am usually very satisfied with the finished product. This is the ‘going up’ part of the ride.  This is the easy part. Then I get to the point where I feel like I have lost my muse. I don’t really WANT to make any art and when I do make something, I feel like it is ok, but not my best work. That is the ‘sitting on the top of the hill, rocking back and forth, waiting for the drop’ part of the ride. And then… it happens… Nothing I make turns out right, I feel like I have forgotten every skill I know and I make a BUNCH of CRAP art. That is the ‘plummeting uncontrollably face first to disaster’ part of the ride.

*THAT* is the very reason I DO NOT ride roller coasters in real life. I HATE that feeling. I don’t like not being in control! I don’t like that feeling of falling to my death with nothing to stop me but a metal bar and shoulder pads!!!!

But what happens at the end of EVERY one of those drops???? There is a huge curve and you are thrust back up into the sky, with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face.  The rest of the ride is a thrill, filled with ups and downs, but in the end you have a huge smile on your face. (Well, not me, obviously, but so I’ve bee told by people who enjoy that sort of thing.)

Did I lose you back there???? Are you still with me?

I know that was long winded, but what I am trying to say is this – In my experience, when I hit one of those drops, I am usually going through some sort of artistic transformation and growth. My style is usually changing and evolving and I feel like I am struggling to keep it the same. I am a creature of habit. I don’t like change and so I like to keep things the same. I don’t want my art to change because I am confident and comfortable with how it *IS,* so instead of letting go and letting my art evolve as it will, I resist, pull back and fight it every step of the way. And in doing so… I create a ton of (in my opinion) CRAP art along the way.

It isn’t until I *finally* let go and let my MUSE take control that I get past the crap and move on to the next phase in my artistic journey.

*WHEW!!!*

I know I babbled on and on today, but I hope it helped you to see that it is ok to make art that you don’t like.  If art brings you joy, then you must create… even through the rough patches, because those rough patches are what bring you to greatness.

~If there is no struggle, there is no progress.Frederick Douglass ~

I hope you enjoy my process, long and unsuccessful as it may be, but more importantly, I hope you take to heart what I have said. Relax. Play. Just enjoy the process. Let the muse guide you and you will never go wrong ❤

I will be back on Thursday with this week’s Thrift Shop Thursday haul.

Wanna know what I got at the thrift store this week???? Watch and seeeeee 😀

Happy Earth Day!!!!!!

I try to be as kind to the Earth as I can every day, which is one of the reasons I love upcycling and repurposing items in my art. Not only is today Earth Day, but it is Mixed MEdieology Monday, which means I get to share one of those art projects with you 😀

This weeks project is an upcycled bracelet. I found a bag of plastic bracelets at the thrift store this week and I flipped one of them to create a beautiful, one of a kind accessory.

DSC07444

I covered the bracelet in book pages that had been colored with Distress Inks. While that was drying, I added alcohol inks to an old piece of broken costume jewelery and filled the center with glitter. The quote ‘Sparkle Forever’ just happened to be on the book page I used, so I knew it was meant to be the focal point of the piece. I laid a quote on top of the glitter and sealed it with Glossy Accents. There were a few spots of the original pink bracelet that did not get covered with the book pages, so I added a bit of glitter to those areas as well. Finally, I attached the charm to the bracelet with E-6000.

I wore this bracelet when I went out yesterday and I got several compliments on it. I see more of these in my future 🙂

I would love for you to share this post and subscribe to my blog.

I will see you on Thursday with more thrift store finds!

After two weeks of being sick and 11 straight days of laryngitis, I am finally feeling more like my self and I have be back in my studio creating and finishing several projects.

One of the projects I was able to complete is the Steampunk Mask that I started a couple of weeks ago. I found this mask at the thrift store and I *immediately* knew what I was going to do to it! You can follow the full journey of the mask by watching the Thrift Shop Thursday video and then the Steampunk Mask Part 1 video.

Just to reacap, I sanded the entire mask and gave it a coat of black craft paint. I molded a TON of gears with resin and painted all of them black as well. This weeks video shows you everything I did after that 🙂

DSC_0452

I painted the mask with gold paint and painted all of the gears with various metallic paints. I embossed a piece of metal tape with an embossing folder and then painted it with a few washed of black paint and water. I tore the metal tape into random pieces and stuck them to the mask.

Finally, I added a couple of layers of gears, a spring and a miniature lightbulb with E-6000.

The mask already has a small gold hook on the top, so this is perfect for hanging. I totally LOVE this project, so I haven’t decided if I want to offer it for sale or keep it for myself!

If you like this project, how about sharing it with your friends 😉 You can also subscribe to this blog and my YouTube channel, that way you won’t miss any of the absolutely FABULOUS projects I share in the future   *wink, wink*
