Ahhhhhhh, the lazy days of summer. I am not even kidding when I tell you the only reason I got out of my recliner yesterday was to go pee or make food. Those kinds of days are a rarity for me, so I took full advantage and sat on my happy ass ALL DAY LONG. I finally decided to uproot myself around 9pm and I headed into the studio to work on this weeks project.

In the vein of being lazy, this project was all about keeping it simple! I used a limited pallet as well as limited supplies. I only used what I had within arm’s reach (which in MY studio is literally EVERYTHING, but for the sake of this post, lets just pretend I have more space M’kay?) which was acrylic paint, ink and prismacolor art sticks.

I gessoed the record, painted the vinyl area with the acrylic paint and inks and then I drew and shaded my girls face with the art sticks. I used a small pieces of a book page for her dress and finished the piece off with an oil pastel and some Twinkling H2o’s.

I think she is super cute and I love the peaceful expression on her face. This piece is now available for sale, so email me at mixedmedidology@gmail.com if interested.

We are going out of town next week, so I am setting myself a challenge for Thrift Shop Thursday and Mixed MEdieology Monday – Find something that I can alter ‘on the road’ and use limited supplies to create the entire piece! Tune in next week to see what I find and how it turns out 😀

It was slim pickin’s at the thrift store this week!

I searched for over an hour before finally choosing an item.  My camcorder died before I found my item of the week, * totally NOT because it was plugged into the camera but not the WALL*  so you don’t see me actually FIND the item, but you can watch the rest of the shopping trip below. Plus I also show you a few of the other things I have picked up at yard sales and Michael’s recently.

Stay until the end for a cute outtake 😉

HELLER 😀

Oh my goodness, I have got something super cool to show you this week, but first, I have to tell you about my shopping trip.

I needed some plant pots this weekend, so I stopped by the thrift store to see if they had any. Unfortunately, they did not, but since I was there, I figured I would look around.  Keep in mind, this was not my regular day to record Thrift  Shop Thursday, so I did not have my camcorder with me!

Normally when I go to the thrift store, I have a system. I start with the candles, move to the craft section, head over to the books, followed by the housewares, furniture, clothes and finally finishing at the boutique. This week, however, I veered from my normal path. It was like something was pulling me to work with fabric, so I listened to my instincts and headed straight for the clothing section.

I was just looking through the clothes for some unique fabric when I discovered this weeks item. It was a plus size (5 X) dress and even though it was entirely too big for me, I KNEW I had to have it! Luckily I had my phone with me and I was able to whip it out and shoot the video footage of the find!!!

Fast forward to this weeks regular (recorded) T S T  trip – I got NUTHIN’! I searched the ENTIRE store and didn’t find a single thing that inspired me or even had any potential for altering! I am sooo glad I had my phone with me when I found that dress because if I hadn’t I would have probably created something I wasn’t really happy with… and that wouldn’t be very nice, now would it Precious.

I have already finished making the skirt and I can’t wait to share the video with you on Mixed MEdieology Monday!

*Another little behind the scenes tidbit – You can’t tell it, but since I had already found the dress (and altered it!) by the time I shot this weeks footage, I am actually wearing the finished skirt in this weeks Thrift Shop Thursday Video! Sooo, it’s kind of like I time traveled… I am wearing the item to FIND the item ;)*

My blog will be changing within the next couple of weeks, so keep watching for some big announcements.

That is it for today.  I will see you on Monday!

I have just finished editing this weeks video and I am STILL cracked up laughing!!!!!

My dear friend Robyn Couillard flew to Norfolk from Minnesota for a visit. While she was here, we took a trip to the thrift store and she was awesome (and brave) enough to make a special guest appearance on the show. This was the most fun I have ever had at the thrift store and I have NO idea how I am EVER going to top this one!

Be sure to stick around after the talkie bit to see some behind the scenes footage 😉

Wanna know what I got at the thrift store this week???? Watch and seeeeee 😀

Happy Earth Day!!!!!!

I try to be as kind to the Earth as I can every day, which is one of the reasons I love upcycling and repurposing items in my art. Not only is today Earth Day, but it is Mixed MEdieology Monday, which means I get to share one of those art projects with you 😀

This weeks project is an upcycled bracelet. I found a bag of plastic bracelets at the thrift store this week and I flipped one of them to create a beautiful, one of a kind accessory.

I covered the bracelet in book pages that had been colored with Distress Inks. While that was drying, I added alcohol inks to an old piece of broken costume jewelery and filled the center with glitter. The quote ‘Sparkle Forever’ just happened to be on the book page I used, so I knew it was meant to be the focal point of the piece. I laid a quote on top of the glitter and sealed it with Glossy Accents. There were a few spots of the original pink bracelet that did not get covered with the book pages, so I added a bit of glitter to those areas as well. Finally, I attached the charm to the bracelet with E-6000.

I wore this bracelet when I went out yesterday and I got several compliments on it. I see more of these in my future 🙂

I would love for you to share this post and subscribe to my blog.

I will see you on Thursday with more thrift store finds!
